2017/2018 Tuition and Commitment

January 16, 2017

Dear Parents/Guardians:

It is the time of year again when we begin to prepare for the next school year. Thus the new 2017-2018 Tuition and Fees Schedule is attached to this letter and can be viewed on our website (www.vws.ca) under the Admissions tab. This past year saw much greater financial stability, and we implemented a new salary structure for our grade and high school teachers helping bring their compensation into a competitive position with other public and private school teachers, and we are currently in the process of reviewing salaries for our ECE instructors. This is long overdue, and will help enhance stability in our existing teacher ranks and our ability to continue to attract excellent educators to our school. We expect this to reward us through increased enrollment as we move forward, both by helping us to retain existing students and attract new students, which will further enhance our financial position. To be prudent, the Board of Trustees has approved a 3% increase in tuition for the 2017/2018 school year. This is a targeted increase to help defray the additional costs associated with our decision to pay fairer teacher salaries, not an increase for general purposes. It allows us to move forward in a financially responsible manner until the stability associated with the fairer salaries yields the financial benefits we expect. We thank you for your ongoing support, financial and otherwise, in the School’s continuing development and the pursuit of our vision, mission and values.

Another part of the preparation for next year involves confirming our re-enrollment before beginning to process new applications. Attached you will find a Commitment Form which we ask that every family complete and return to the school by Wednesday, February 28, 2017 to secure your child’s place in the appropriate grade/program. At this time, a $200 non-refundable deposit will be required from families with children in those classes which are nearly full or for which there is a wait list. Deposits are required for the following classes for September 2017: Preschool & Kindergarten, Grades 1, 2, 7 and 8. If you submit your form or deposit after February 28, we unfortunately cannot guarantee a space for your child.

Tuition will be due May 1, 2017. If you are paying in full by cash or cheque we will again offer a 5% early payment discount, and the Withdrawal Protection Fee is optional. Alternatively, you can pay monthly via automatic debits from your bank account on the first or the fifteenth of the month (we require a void cheque or banking details if you are new to this system). Twelve monthly payments for the 2017-18 school year will begin on May 1, 2017 and end in April 2018, with the required Withdrawal Protection Fee applied to the first payment.

The application deadline for Tuition Adjustment is also February 28, through Apple Financial on our website. We recognize that some families will be in the process of applying for Tuition Adjustment at the February 28 Commitment deadline and that for some, the decision to re-enroll is contingent on the outcome of this process. Therefore, to reserve a place for your child in a class while you complete the process, we ask you to return your Commitment Form and deposit if applicable, which we will agree to refund in the unlikely event that a Tuition Adjustment agreement is not reached.

Finally, in an effort to promote membership in the Vancouver Waldorf School Society, which is the not-for-profit society that operates the Vancouver Waldorf School, you can now apply for membership simply by checking the box at the bottom of the Commitment Form and writing your name on the line. If you check the box, the $10 membership fee will be deducted along with your first tuition payment, and this applies to both new applications and annual renewals. Among other benefits, membership in the Society allows you to vote on matters of importance to the Society and the School, including on the election of Trustees. Additional family members may also apply at a reduced fee of $1 and can do so by contacting management for an application form, or downloading it at http://www.vws.ca/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/VWSS-Membership-Application-Form.pdf.

Thank you for your continued commitment to Waldorf Education. We look forward to building on the possibilities realized this year.

Yours sincerely,

Eric Doherty
