Grade 12 Play: Wyrd Root

Adapted from Shakespeare’s Macbeth

The Grade Twelve Play, Wyrd Root, began as an interpretation of the play Macbeth. The class changed the setting to a clinical environment and added text from real life doctor-patient interviews, taking the play down a dark and mysterious path. Each student chose their own way to participate in the production; where they could contribute most and where they would find most engaging.

The main character, inspired by Lady Macbeth, evolved from two students desire to play that specific role. To accommodate their desires, the creation and evolution of the character ‘Jane Doe’ took place.

Each new bit of information and unexpected obstacle took the piece in a difference direction, twisting and turning the class’s ideas and perceptions, ultimately allowing for a collaboratively built plot that aimed to find the root of our darkest impulses.
