VWSS Board of Trustees – May Update

Message from VWS Board of Trustees

Dear Parents,

We held our monthly Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, May 10. It was shorter than normal, as we wanted to wrap it up early so we could attend the Community Forum that night (which was well attended and very interesting; our compliments to Laura Bergstrome and the rest of the administration team for organizing and running such a successful event). It was largely an update meeting. Susan Connon-Wilby updated us on our financials, and we remain on track for realizing a small (approximately $10k) surplus this school year. Malcolm Nash spoke about his recent hiring efforts, and he informed us that between prospective new hires and existing teachers taking advantage of our providing financing for Waldorf training, we are on the cusp of having a majority of Waldorf-trained teachers at the high school. (More updates on new hires at the high school will follow in due course.) We heard an update on the status of our search for a Community & Resource Development Manager; in addition to the qualified applicants that had previously sent in their resumes we recently received three new resumes from people with relevant Waldorf and/or development experience. We have a large pool of very qualified individuals that have applied and Susan is in the process of scheduling interviews. Geoff Woodfield discussed continuing efforts to locate an alternative site for the school; as noted earlier, this will likely be a relatively lengthy process. While we are working hard on it, we shouldn’t be expecting any moves in the immediate term. We also approved an updated timeline for the strategic planning process. Finally, we discussed the report from AWSNA on their follow-up visit. As previously discussed, they were impressed by our progress over the last while, and encouraged us to continue to try to increase the number of Waldorf trained teachers in the high school, and upgrade our physical facilities which would assist us in attracting new students. Both of these items have been on our radar for a while, and we are actively taking steps to address them.
