Press Release Fairytale Performance

Unique artistic collaboration comes to West Vancouver

November 12, 2019, unceded ancestral territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish) and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations/North Vancouver, B.C. – The Cascadia Society and the Vancouver Waldorf School (VWS) are set to come together for a unique artistic collaboration between children and people with special needs. Students in grades 4, 8 and 9 at VWS will perform Bees & Trees, A Fairytale Performance with companions from The Cascadia Society on November 28, 2019, at the Kay Meek Theatre in West Vancouver.

The performance will celebrate the 100-year anniversary of Waldorf Education around the world and will feature storytelling, live music, brightly coloured handmade silk costumes and eurythmy – an expressive movement art developed by Rudolf Steiner and Marie von Sivers in the early 20th century.

“The companions have been working hard to give this cultural gift to the community and we are so pleased to be able to collaborate with VWS again this year,” said Ruth Tschannen, Artistic Director at The Cascadia Society. “It really is a unique and special event.”

The heart of the performance is the fairy tale The Queen Bee and the theme of Bees & Trees has been chosen to reflect the concern being shown by many young people, including VWS students, for the future of the environment.

“It is a wonderful experience for the students who are involved as well as all audience members,” said Lorna Fortin, Principal at the Vancouver Waldorf School. “It teaches them about empathy, cooperation and the beauty that can be created through celebrating people’s strengths, no matter what challenges they may face in their daily lives.”

There will be three performances of Bees & Trees, A Fairytale Performance on November 28 – 11 am, 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Tickets and more information can be found at
